I'm really glad you're here. Today I want to talk about deja vu. I think most of us have experienced it at some point. You're going about your day, maybe you're somewhere you've never been before, or you're doing something completely ordinary, and suddenly there's this little flash of familiarity. I've been here before. There's something so strange about that feeling because it usually only lasts for a moment. You notice it, you maybe even say, Oh, I just had deja vu, and then it's gone. The phrase deja vu means already seen, which is a pretty perfect description of what it feels like. Something about the moment feels familiar, even though you can't necessarily connect that familiarity to an actual memory. And of course, there are explanations for what might be happening in the brain when we experience deja vu, but I find it much more interesting to think about some of the spiritual and metaphysical ideas about what it could be. If we allow ourselves to play with the possibilities a little bit, there are some really interesting ones. One of them is past lives. I've talked about past lives before on the podcast, and if you've listened for a while, you know that that's also something that comes up in the work I do. The idea that we may carry things with us from other lifetimes isn't new. We may carry emotional patterns, connections with certain people, fears that don't seem to have an obvious origin, or even a strong connection to a particular place or period of history. So I've always wondered if deja vu could sometimes be another way that past life information surfaces. Maybe something in the present moment matches something our soul has experienced before. It could be a place. Maybe you travel somewhere for the first time and you have this strange sense that it's familiar to you. Something about being there feels known. And if you've lived another life in that place, maybe some part of you does know it. I think we could sometimes assume that if we're remembering a past life, it would come through as an actual memory with details attached to it. We would see who we were and where we lived and what happened. But that isn't always the way things show up. Sometimes what comes through is simply a feeling. And maybe deja vu is one of those feelings. Maybe something in our current experience briefly touches an old memory that we can't consciously access, but our soul recognizes anyways. The other possibility I find really interesting has to do with the idea that we might be existing in more than one dimension or reality at the same time. There are metaphysical theories that suggest the version of reality that we're experiencing right now may not be the only version of reality that exists. There could be other versions of us having different experiences simultaneously. We've talked about timelines on this podcast before, and it's a similar idea. Instead of thinking of our lives as one straight line with only one possible version, imagine multiple versions existing alongside each other. Different choices, different experiences, different paths. And what if those two realities are happening side by side? And what happens when two of them come close together? One of the theories around deja vu is that for a brief moment we may be experiencing some kind of crossover. Maybe the familiarity comes from another version of us having a similar experience somewhere else. And I love thinking about this because deja vu is usually so quick, it's almost like it touches us for a second. You feel it and then it's gone. We go right back to whatever we were doing. If multiple dimensions or realities do exist alongside ours, it makes me wonder how separate they really are. Maybe most of the time we're only aware of the reality we're currently experiencing, but every once in a while there's a little bleed through. It might be a feeling or a shared memory that isn't quite a memory, a sense that the moment exists somewhere else too. And that connects to another idea about time itself. We experience time as past, present, and future, because that's how we move through this physical life. But spiritually, there are beliefs that everything might be happening all at once. Past lives might not technically be past from the perspective of the soul. Another lifetime could be happening at the same time as this one, even though, from our human perspective, we experience one as having happened before the other. And if that's true, the idea of deja vu gets even more interesting. Maybe we're not remembering something that happened before. Maybe we're briefly becoming aware of something that's happening somewhere else. I don't know if that's what's actually happening, obviously, but I love ideas that make us reconsider what we normally take for granted. Time is one of those things. We organize our entire life around it, but our human experience of time might be different from how consciousness or the soul experiences it. There's also a possibility that deja vu could be connected to dreams. I think we've probably all had dreams that disappear almost immediately after waking up. You know you dreamed and you may even remember a little bit of it, but then within minutes, most of it's gone. But what happens to those dreams? Do we completely forget them or are they stored somewhere outside of our conscious awareness? There are people who believe that some dreams allow us to glimpse things before they happen. And maybe occasionally we experience something in waking life that we've already encountered in a dream we've forgotten. Then when the actual moment arrives, there's a little spark of recognition. I think that's fascinating because it makes me wonder how often something we call deja vu might actually have originated in a dream. Maybe we don't remember the dream well enough to make the connection, we only recognize the feeling. There's also another possibility that connects more to the idea of our souls having some awareness of the life we're coming into. If we believe that we choose certain experiences before we're born, or that certain people were meant to encounter each other, or certain things our soul intends to experience, maybe deja vu is occasionally a moment of recognition. Something in us recognizes where we've arrived. I don't necessarily think that that means every experience is planned, or that every single person we meet was arranged before we got here. I think we have far too much free will for that to be predetermined, but I do believe that there are certain connections and experiences that feel different. We've probably all met someone who felt very familiar very quickly, or had an experience that seemed strangely significant, even though we couldn't explain why. Maybe deja vu sometimes happens when we arrive at one of those points. A little recognition from a part of us that sees more of the picture than our conscious mind does. What I like about all these possibilities is they don't require us to decide exactly what deja vu is. Maybe there isn't one explanation. Maybe sometimes it is connected to a past life, maybe sometimes it's a forgotten dream. Maybe sometimes there's some kind of crossover between timelines or dimensions, and maybe sometimes it's simply one of the strange things our brains do. I don't think we have to turn every experience into a spiritual event, but I don't think that we have to dismiss an experience just because we can't explain it. We can be curious. The next time I experience deja vu, I want to notice what I'm doing when it happens. Is there something about the place that feels familiar? Is there a person involved? Does the feeling seem connected to anything in particular, or simply the strange flash of recognition? Once I lean into that, maybe I can uncover, is this from another lifetime? Or did I accidentally cross dimension? I can become aware and wonder, because maybe there are moments when something from another lifetime is slipping through. Maybe different versions of us occasionally brush up against another. Maybe dreams take us places that our waking minds don't remember. Maybe our souls recognize things before we do, or maybe there are possibilities we haven't even considered. And I think that's what makes deja vu such an interesting experience. It's so ordinary that most of us have experienced it, and yet it's strange enough that just for a moment it can make us wonder whether our experience of time, memory, or reality is quite as straightforward as it seems.
